At the premiere event for the Lifetime Original Movie, “Pretty Hurts,” brought to you by GSK, the spotlight wasn’t just on the red carpet — it was on the powerful stories of real lives and families impacted by meningococcal disease, known as meningitis – families whose experiences were honored by the movie. “Pretty Hurts” follows Julie, a relatable mom juggling work and family life, whose world is shaken when her daughter Lauren enters a beauty pageant to win college scholarship money and meningitis suddenly strikes close to home, showcasing the impact of the disease on both their family and an entire community.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan joined meningitis advocates, Ask2BSure moms, and the movie talent to amplify an important message: teens and young adults 16-to 23-year-old are one of the age groups at increased risk for meningitis. The bacteria that cause meningitis can spread through certain everyday behaviors including kissing, sharing food and drinks, coughing or sneezing, and living in close quarters.

While uncommon, meningitis is a serious illness that can cause permanent consequences, or even death, sometimes within 24 hours.

Talk to your teen’s doctor about meningitis and Ask2BSure about meningitis vaccination.
