Meningitis: Know the Risks, Recognize the Signs, Protect Your Health
What is Meningitis?
Meningitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection that causes inflammation of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can develop rapidly and, without proper treatment, can lead to severe complications, including brain damage, hearing loss, or even death.
Meningitis can affect anyone, but certain groups, such as infants, teenagers, college students, and individuals with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk.
Know the Symptoms
Early recognition of meningitis is crucial. Symptoms can develop quickly and may resemble the flu, but they escalate rapidly. Common signs include:
- Sensitivity to light
- Confusion or difficulty concentrating
- Seizures
- Rash (in some cases)
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Nausea or vomiting
If you or someone you know shows these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.
Causes of Meningitis
Most cases of bacterial meningitis are caused by three different bacteria:
- Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
- Pneumococcus (Pnc)
- Meningococcus
Bacterial meningitis is a very serious infection of the fluid and membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Despite prompt diagnosis and treatment, death and brain damage in survivors is common.
Meningococcal disease is a serious, life-threating disease that requires immediate medical attention. There are several serogroups of meningococcal disease, six of which cause most invasive disease worldwide (A, B, C, W, X and Y).
